Reasons Your Toilet Won't Flush

Why Won’t My Toilet Flush?

Your toilet is an appliance that you use every day—the last thing you want to experience after using the restroom is a toilet that won’t flush. While some issues can be resolved with simple do-it-yourself maintenance, others require a call to the plumber.

Here are some of the most common reasons your toilet won’t flush.

The Toilet is Clogged

Whether you’ve flushed too much toilet paper or tried to flush something that does not belong in the toilet, a clogged pipe may be the culprit. In most cases, this can be remedied by using a plunger to dislodge whatever is blocking water flow.

Tank Water Levels are Too Low

At any given time, your toilet’s tank should be filled to about one inch below your overflow tube. When the water levels are too low, this can prevent your toilet from flushing properly or at all. In this case, you should check to see if your valve is on—if it’s off, this turns it on and flush to make sure your toilet is flushing correctly.

The Lift Chain Isn’t Functioning

Your toilet’s lift chain attaches your handle on the outside of your toilet to the flapper inside of your tank. When there’s too much slack in the chain or it’s broken, this prevents you from being able to flush your toilet at all. In most cases, you just need to adjust the length of your chain to get your toilet to flush normally.

When to Call a Professional

If you’ve tried these do it yourself fixes and your toilet still won’t flush properly, it’s time to call a professional. Plumbers are equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to properly assess and repair your plumbing to get it back into functioning condition.
